Words about Debra Jennings

I guess you could say I began my writing career in third grade, where I was part of a group of students who wrote and unofficially published children's stories. That was also the year I won a coloring contest, so it was still anybody's guess which way I would go.

It soon became apparent, however, that my artistic talent was limited to crayons, and my linguistic skills continued to do me proud, even as the editor of the high school newspaper. In college, I took a short foray into theater and communications before returning to my roots and graduating with a B.A. in English with a writing emphasis.

Since then, I've had the opportunity to write on variety of topics including business, technology, travel and entertainment. My portfolio includes articles, interviews, reviews, case studies, e-newsletters, email creatives, website content, marketing collateral and technical documentation (see samples).

Along the way I took an eight-year detour into Information Technology, where I learned how to translate computer-ese into normal prose. I also learned about process improvement (Lean, Six Sigma and Innovation). I helped author a unique business how-to manual called The Innovator's Toolkit: 50+ Techniques for Predictable and Sustainable Organic Growth, published by Wiley. I was also a contributing author to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lean Six Sigma.

Most recently, I've been working as a freelance writer and editor for clients in a variety of industries including performance excellence and innovation, technology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and magazine publishing. I've also been helping clients with their social media strategy.

I still like to pretend that I have some visual acuity; I've graduated from crayons to cameras. I also enjoy traveling, outdoor recreation and watching movies.
